English Rose
Good, Cheap Food in The Valley

by Clayton
(New Jersey)

In April 2008 we stayed at Masara (which we loved) on Katouche Bay near The Valley. Our first night we were tired from traveling and wanted something nearby for dinner. The ubiquitous Anguilla dining guide booklet listed this place in The Valley called the English Rose, so we decided to try it.

It took a while to find the place. It's near the drugstore, a short walk towards the main roundabout on the same side of the street, but its entire front- including the sign!- was covered with ivy.

It was a Thursday night, and the place was pretty quiet- just a few locals. The food was good and plentiful, and the price was right: $5 for a burger and fries, $12 for fish and chips. We had dinner with drinks for less than $30 US- not easy on Anguilla.

The second time we went was on Friday night the following week. It was karaoke night and the place was packed with locals singing Bob Marley tunes, smoking cigars, and drinking Pyrat rum. It was a great atmosphere. One woman had a beautiful voice; she would have been a winner on Anguillian Idol. (I didn't sing; they would have banished me from ever returning to Anguilla.)

All told, it's a good place. You might want to pick which night you go, depending on how you feel about crowds and karaoke ;)

Nori's Reply: All the years and I've never tried English Rose! Sounds like a great spot for dinner and nightlife. Karaoke on Anguilla? Didn't know it existed. I'm not much of a singer, but it's always fun to watch. Thanks for the great tip! Also, didn't know Masara was open again. How was your stay there?

Best Value on the Island
by: BonnieJoy

We have beening coming to Anguilla for close to ten years. Of all the places that we have eaten, English Rose tops them all.

We travel all over the world and I always say "eat where the locals eat." English Rose is a great place to eat and have some cold beers and have a wonderful time for less than 35.00 U.S.

The creole snapper with salad and rice and beans is worth making the trip from Meads Bay. The place is clean and the people are freindly. This is a must when you visit Anguilla.

Followup on Nori's Question
by: Clayton

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Masara, which we learned about from a friend who stays there for a week nearly every February. We hadn't heard of Anguilla, either, but now it's my favorite Caribbean island.

I'll post another comment later with details and a picture- the sunsets were fantastic. The short version: the villa (with 1- or 2-BR option) was clean and well-kept, and the price was good. The staff is very friendly, too. We stayed in #11, which is right on Katouche Bay, on a bluff 10 ft (3 m) above the water. I liked being in a secluded spot on a beautiful beach with good snorkeling and hiking (yet another story).

Feels weird to comment on my own page, but of course I'm going to give it 5 stars ;)
